“There are no ordinary people. You have never talked to a mere mortal. Nations, cultures, arts, civilizations - these are mortal, and their life is to ours as the life of a gnat. But it is immortals whom we joke with, work with, marry, snub and exploit - immortal horrors or everlasting splendors."
- C.S. Lewis The Weight of Glory
It is far too easy to go about the day to day of life and not think of eternity. It is only when we step back, and in our abiding see that every person we encounter is not merely a mortal body, but an eternal soul. Jesus declared that "the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost." (Luke 19:10).
Our relationships with believers and the Church is of the utmost importance but our duty does not stop there. We are to follow the example of Jesus and seek out relationships with coworkers, neighbors, friends, and family that do not know the Lord. An important part of this is receiving God's heart for the lost. God's heart for the lost is clearly visible throughout the narrative of the Bible, culminating with the ultimate story of love, the Gospel.
I encourage you to pray to receive God's heart for the lost more and more each day with me. As we abide with Jesus, He has promised that He will abide with us, including His heart.
Lord, give us your heart for lost people. We recognize that Jesus came to seek and save the lost. Help us invest in relationships with lost people, that they would call us friend.
