Diligently Seeking

5 By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death: “He could not be found, because God had taken him away.” For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God 6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him. Hebrews 11:6

This verse comes as a part of the "hall of faith" in Hebrews 11. More specifically, this verse follows the mention of Enoch, a descendent of Adam and ancestor of Noah. You may recall the name Enoch, because amazingly, he did not die. In the verse above, the author of Hebrews is making clear the connection between faith and coming to/pleasing God.

The Bible does not promise us that we will escape physical death by having a certain amount of faith. However, this passage is making an even better promise. Through faith and "earnestly seeking", we can be like Enoch and be delivered from the power of death.

Ephesians 2 is a popular passage among Christians, and for good reason. Read this passage again keeping in mind the story of Enoch.

1And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.

4But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, 5even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— 6and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus,7so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. 8For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, 9not a result of works, so that no one may boast. 10For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

God's grace can truly save us from spiritual death. He rewards our faith and seeking by making us alive together with Christ. All we must have is faith in who He is and that He rewards those who earnestly seek Him.
